MENREELS is rolling out a new feature today: Live Chat (Beta) — a real-time global chat room built directly into the platform. Whether you're scrolling the grid or watching a video in fullscreen, you can now chat with other viewers without leaving the experience.
How It Works
Chat is available everywhere on MENREELS — on the home grid and inside the fullscreen video player. Here's how to get started:
- Open from the menu — tap the hamburger menu and select "Chat" to open the chat panel.
- Open from the player — while watching a video, tap the chat bubble icon in the top-right controls to slide the chat panel in over the video.
- No sign-up required — you're automatically assigned a fun random username like "SwiftFalcon42" or "CosmicPanther7". No email, no account, no personal data collected.
- Reserve your name — want to keep your username? Tap the pencil icon next to your name and set an optional password to claim it permanently.
Semi-Transparent, Always Connected
The chat panel is designed to feel like part of the experience, not an interruption. It slides in from the right with a semi-transparent, blurred background — so you can keep watching the video underneath while chatting. Messages appear in modern chat bubbles with your messages on the right and others on the left, each with a unique color per username.
When you're not in the chat, you'll still see live notifications when someone sends a message. On the grid, notifications slide in from the top-left with a ringing bell icon. In the video player, they appear as captions over the video. Tap any notification to jump straight into the conversation.
Built for Safety
Chat on MENREELS is designed with safety as a priority:
- Profanity filter — inappropriate language is automatically detected and masked (e.g., "f**k") using an AI-powered bad words dictionary.
- Rate limiting — each user can send up to 60 messages per minute, with a minimum 1-second gap between messages to prevent spam.
- Message length — messages are capped at 160 characters (SMS length) to keep conversations concise.
- Input sanitization — all messages are sanitized on both the client and server to prevent any form of code injection or abuse.
- No personal data — IP addresses are never exposed. Only a one-way hash is stored internally for moderation. Your location (city and country) is shown when you join, sourced from CloudFlare's network — not from any tracking or IP lookup.
The Welcome Bot
When you join the chat, the official MENREELS account (with a verified badge) greets you with a personalized welcome message and a random conversation starter like "What's up?" or "Seen anything cool?" — making the chat feel alive even when it's quiet.
What's Next
This is a beta release — we're gathering feedback and watching how the community uses it. Planned improvements include:
- Video chat — WebRTC-powered 1-on-1 and group video calls, using the existing chat infrastructure for signaling.
- CloudFlare Turnstile — bot protection to ensure only real humans can participate in the chat.
- Per-video chat rooms — discuss specific videos with others who are watching the same content.
- Emoji reactions — quick reactions without typing a message.
